How do I get paid?

How do I get paid - understanding W2 vs. 1099

Written by Cloud Dentistry

Your booking request and agreement spell out the payment terms for each temp assignment. Offices choose their preferred terms — unless you've set yourself up as W2 Only, in which case your selection takes priority.

The five payment terms you may see:

  • Same Day, Up to 7 days, Up to 14 days — you collect payment directly from the office, paid as an independent contractor (1099).

  • Cloud Direct Pay (CDP) — Cloud Dentistry pays you directly as an independent contractor (1099), based on the timesheet you submit.

  • W2 Only — the office pays you as their employee and withholds taxes.

You can see the terms for any assignment by clicking into the booking details.

Independent Contractor (1099)

This covers Same Day, 7-day, 14-day, and Cloud Direct Pay assignments. A few things to know:

  • Taxes aren't withheld, so set aside money for what you'll owe at tax time.

  • Offices may ask you to complete a W9 for their tax reporting.

  • For Cloud Direct Pay, you'll upload a completed timesheet with your actual hours worked. See how to complete and upload a CDP timesheet.

  • For Same Day, 7-day, and 14-day terms, you collect payment from the office directly — no timesheet to upload.

W2 Only

If you've chosen W2 Only in your settings, every booking you accept will be processed as W2, even if the office originally selected a different payment term.

A couple of important notes:

  • Confirm with the office before the booking. Not every office is set up to pay W2. Send a quick message to confirm. Something like: "I see you've sent a booking request. I'm set up to only accept W2 bookings — could you confirm whether your office is able and willing to pay me as a W2 employee? If so, let me know what forms I should bring to make the process easier on your end."

  • Cloud Dentistry can't assist with W2 payment issues. When you're paid as a W2 employee, you're legally an employee of the office — so missing payments, payment disputes, and pay guarantees all fall outside what we're able to help with.

What to have ready

Whatever your classification, be prepared to complete tax forms (W9 or W4) and show identity documentation like a driver's license or social security card. These can be required regardless of how much you're paid, and before any payment is remitted to you.

A note on mileage

Mileage compensation isn't a standard part of Cloud Dentistry bookings — neither Cloud Dentistry nor the dental office is required to reimburse travel or mileage costs. If mileage matters to you, factor commute distance into the assignments you accept, or raise it directly with the office before confirming the booking if you'd like to negotiate it. You can also update your radius in the "Booking Settings" section of your account.
