How do I get paid - understanding W2 and 1099

Payment is typically handled directly by the dental office unless the payment terms specify "Cloud Direct Pay” or CDP. The booking agreement that’s linked to the booking, will specify the payment method as well.

When the office pays you directly, it can either be as an independent contractor (1099) or as an employee (W2).

W2:

  • Note that if you or the office specifies “W2 Only”, then the payment terms of the booking will be W2 even if the other party has indicated something else.

  • Professionals should always confirm via our messaging feature whether the office that sent the booking request is able and willing to pay them via W2? One great way to confirm this is by sending the office a message such as:

  • "I see that you’ve sent me a booking request. I am set up to only accept W2 bookings. I’d love to confirm if your office is able and willing to pay me as a W2 employee. If so, could you let me know what forms I should bring to my booking to make the process easier for your office?"

  • When an assignment is marked as W2 only, Cloud Dentistry is unable to provide any assistance regarding issues with missing payment or issue any payment guarantees since you are considered an employee of the office with this classification.

Independent Contractor (1099):

  • When you are paid through Cloud Direct Pay, it’s always as an independent contractor (1099).

  • Taxes are not withheld when paid as an independent contractor (1099), so make sure that you set aside enough money from the payment in order to pay the tax when it’s due.
